I Said I Would Never Do This, But ...

What's your secret to success? With your blog, I mean.

I've been part of the blogosphere for a few short months, but already I've learned some important rules.

Leave a comment, get a comment.
Be funny
Try not to judge people

I'm following the rules, so what's the problem? I whiz around the web reading and commenting, but I'm not getting any action back. Don't get me wrong, I love each and every one of you who visit me and comment, but you all gets lots of love and ... well ... I'm jealous. There I said it! I exposed myself as an insecure, whiny bitch. Dammit, my husband was right!

Do I need more buttons, gadgets, ads on my site? Should I open a Cafepress store? Does that even really work? Am I boring? Am I not controversial enough? Do you use services like Blog Explosion or Bloglines? I'm trying to get enough points, or whatever you call them, to rent a blog but I'm not there yet.

So c'mon, spill the beans. How did you get so popular? What do I need to do to pimp my blog? Help a mother out. I promise I won't steal any commenters. There's enough room in the blogospere for all of us if that's what you're afraid of. You tell me your secrets and I'll tell you mine ....

p.s. I'll still go on writing even if you don't want to share. I love having this blog. It's given me a purpose, a sense of freedom that I haven't had in a long time. Just wanted to see if there's something else I should be doing. Thanks mamas!

Well. I say read a lot, post good comments that stand out - flattery isn't really the best - just something that says you read it and got it.

On your site, post great stuff.

It'll come. :)

I don't know what to say, I guess I'm stuck in that boat with you. LOL
So I will greatly benefit from anything suggested in your post too LOL
I love your blog though, I read it and comment every chance I get :)

You took the words right out of my mouth. I think if you just keep writing, commenting and networking it will eventually come. At least that's what I keep telling myself : )

I am not that popular, so I really don't have too many words of advice. I don't even have any points at Blog Explosion. I guess just get yourself out there, enjoy other blogs and comment (which is kind of your intro) and take it from there.

I love your blog, by the way!

I don't know if I'd be considered "popular" per se, but I have a good solid readership and I get a respectable number of comments and I think that's where I'm happiest. We all start off with little or no readership (I started in late November). I never aspired to have lots of readers or "blog friends". It just happened by interacting a lot with other people. I think leaving comments that show you thought about what they said resonates with other bloggers a lot, also. Don't worry. It'll happen :-)

Personally I don't think that all the gagets are really adding anything to a blog and often take away from the content. I hate seeing one with a ton of ads, I will read it but I prefer ones that are pure and simple like yours. Just like there are a ton of get rich schemes there are probably a ton of get readers fast schemes. I am betting , though, that hard work (commenting ect) is the best way to go for lasting readers.

It takes time. I read and comment a lot and it is finally "paying off". I started blogging almost a year ago and never thought anyone would read my blog. I think you are doing great, I would not change a thing!

(when I joined Crazy Hip Blog Mamas I did get a boast in readers that may help if you are not joined yet!)

I read you. Is that good enough? Maybe not, since you don't know me from a hole in the wall. But our husbands have very similar personality traits, so I feel I can relate to you on that aspect. I tihnk I have about 4 regular commenters, not sure how many actual readers.

I'm not famous, so I can't offer any advice here.

I just wanted to tell you that I like your blog, so please keep writing if you enjoy it. I think that's the whole point, right? (That you enjoy it, not that I like it!)

you get a heck of a lot of comments on your blog as far as I can see. So your recipe for your blog seems to be doing fine. Me on the other hand I just get people who read and lurk.. but very little comments.. which is fine - I know that I am loved (I think!) LOL

XOXO

Looks to me you are doing quite well for a short timer.

Just remember not all posts will get equal replies. Like I had to think long and hard to find an answer that wasn't just another repeat of what others said above me.

Readership is what you want. The comments will come. (And if you keep writing, the readership will come).

I think you get a good deal of comments — accurately suggesting a wildly popular blog. What's your blog goal?

Looks like you are doing pretty well! Will keep checking in and commenting

I'm in the same boat as you... I just had my first 20 comment post the other day and threw myself a party!
All the readership that I've gotten is from commenting on other people's blogs and I'm happy with the (small) group of blog friends that I've made that way. Where's the pressure coming from that you're putting on yourself to be read more? Personally, I think you have a good following (if that's the right word). Quality not quantity, right?

I'm a newbie and no pretty much nothing about this blog world I just wanted to write.

I just stumbled on your blog today and I have to say - I really like it and look forward to reading more.

I don't get too many comments either, and to be quite honest, I just don't care. There's this weird competition in the blog world that I have promised myself not to get swept into, and I just write for me and for anyone who wants to read. If they leave a comment, great; if not, I will still write.

Also, I've been to a lot of the "popular" blogs with zillions of comments a day and quite frankly, none of them so far have been anything I would read on a normal basis. It's just a matter of "clicking" with the writer for me, and I like your blog, hence I am commenting! :)

I am totally new to this so of course I have no advice, but I totally get what you are saying. I try to remind myself not to feel like I need to please others. I stopped doing that in real life, so why would I start doing that virtually? I do start feeling pressure on myself to improve my own writing skills because I've read so many amazing writers.

You were one of the first blogs that I discovered so I'd say you are doing lots of things right.

I, for one, appreciate you! Don't go anywhere!

Visiting blogs--is serious business! I have defined my alloted time to blog-browse...as doing research. "Where's mom?" "She's doing research"--
And of course, I don't lurk, I post! When people come to my blog and post...and I return the favor...and soon--I have made faithful friends that I must visit. "Where's mom?" "She's visiting" "Or is she researching?"

:) Diane

Thanks for visiting my blog. :) I just started blogging in October, but I did connect with a local group of bloggers (in Nashville) and I'm on the Nashville bloggers blogroll. Also, I don't think I've ever gotten over 20 comments on one post! I try not to get hung up on comments. I've written some meaningful and more serious things but I get the most comments on some of the silliest posts I've written. Personally, I like clean blog templates. I've recently added two ads and I hope they aren't obnoxious. I love original writing and humor. I think you're doing great! Just keeping visiting other blogs that you identify with and commenting and you'll pick up readers. Don't be hard on yourself.

Well you are doing something right because I think you are getting lots of comments! It's more than I get and I've been blogging since 2004...LOL...I'm obviously not that interesting! I think mine also has to do that I censor myself ALOT!
Don't worry though it will come!

Yeah, I think you're getting lots of comments! I have no idea how to be succesful ... but the blogs I like reading the best are the ones that update frequently and that have honst writing on them. That's you, mama, so I think you're doing great.

I rented a blog this week and it seems to be getting me some traffic! I just spent a few hours surfing on BE for a couple days in a row, late at night ... (that sounded bad but you know what I mean).

MrsFortune said...

Oh, sorry, I meant "HONEST" and I'm gonna say a big NO NO on the more gadgets and buttons thing. I find all that stuff really annoying. That's a personal thing though.

chichimama said...

Look at how many comments you just got! You're doing better than me! If you figure it out, let me know, LOL.

The buttons and gadgets annoy me too.

Just wanted to let you know, I have become addicted to blogs in the last year or so, and I happen upon most of the new ones (like this one) by clicking on your name in a comment in someone else's blog! So keep making interesting comments and people will want to see more of what you have to say! At least I do.

Movin Mom said...

Okay let me let you feel better-
I love what I've have read so far and you have 27 comments here sister... My max so far is 12! I did let my green side show with MOM-101 because her daily average seems to be 45-50 comments a day. My guess is that you have high standards and set high goals. Thats great- keep visiting sites and if you build it...........
They will come...

Not much more to add to what others have already said. I've been blogging almost a year now and in the first few months I had no comments. Of course my main purpose of writing is for myself -- to document things that happen and have the chance to write, which I love -- but the comments are a bonus.

I visited blogs far and wide in the early days, and commented mostly on blogs whose writers I felt some commonality with. I did (and do) try to make insightful comments. Sometimes people will come back to visit me, and sometimes they won't.

One different thing about my blog is that I don't advertise in any blog directories, or let search engines index my blog. I did join Crazy Hip Blog Mamas and am on the BlogHer blogroll, but that's it. It cuts down on random traffic to my site, but I have developed a regular readership which I like.
