Help Me Out Here

What is an appropriate amount of money to spend on a 3 year-olds birthday? We are going to a party today and I bought the guest of honor Hungry Hungry Hippos. It was probably about 12 bucks at Target (gotta love 'em). I was on the phone with a friend who will be attending and she was on her way out to pick up, "a couple of outfits for Michael." Now it's probably not that much money, maybe 20 or 30 bucks but does that make my gift a cheap one? Should I go out and buy something else now?

How much do you usually spend on kid's birthdays???

I aim to spend between $10 and $15, but I find realistically it ends up being more between $15 and $20. I guess it depends on who the kid is and how close they are to my daughter(s), etc.

It can definitely add up, though.

I go by the kid, it depends on who the child is and what they like. I don't think it matters how much you spend on a gift. But yeah, like Nancy said, if it's a best friend to my daughter or son, or a family member.

I don't know I usually just buy whatever I know the child will enjoy. :)

Love your blog btw. :)

What you bought is the ABSOLUTE perfect present. I usually spend around 15.00, depending. If I find something that LOOKS more expensive, for less, I am all over it!

J's Mommy, how much fun can this 3 year old have with clothes?

Hungry Hungry Hippos always wins hands down, no need to buy anything else.

You don't want to know how much we use to spend on our kids, but then we discovered that it doesn't take much to please them, so we are saving a bundle now!

$1o - $15 for a random child-friend, $25 to $30 on a relative, very close friend's child.

Hungry Hippos rocks, your gift will be much cooler than the clothes.

Hungry Hungry Hippos is the best. you did great. How much do I spend? Depends more on our current finances than who the kid is!

Yep, I would say anywhere between 10 & 15 dollars should do it.

I think HH Hippos is an awesome gift! Regardless of how much it costs. I have a cousin who is like 3, and every birthday I spend about $6 on trucks for him from Tar-jay, and those are always his favorite gifts, he likes them way more than the $50 clothes his mom's friends buy him!!!

HHH is an awesome gift. We usually spend anywhere from $10-30 on younger kids' birthday gifts, and we usually go to Target for them :) I think more than $30 can be too much for a young kid, but really, we try to just make sure it's a cool, interactive gift the kid can use.

I would spend around the same amount as you! I love the HHH game great choice!

Target rocks, HH rocks, and $10 is more than enough to spend on a 3 year old!

The clothes aren't a present for him; they are a present for his parents. Who's damn birthday is it anyway?

Not that I can add much here, but will just throw my voice in as well for in the $10 - $15 range "typically"

Depends on the level of friendship in our house. On average though, with my 8 year old twin daughters, I spend about $13 for a gift for each of them to take. (So 13x2..)
